This piece was inspired by a Catrina sculpture I fell in love with back in 2007 while visiting my mother's hometown in Michoacan, Mexico. While there, we took a tour around neighboring pueblos to learn about their micro-cultures and artistries. In a pueblo called Capula, known for their clay works, we walked into an artisan shop where I found this Catrina. I was instantly enamored by the beautifully hand-crafted sculpture when I saw her across the room. As much as I wanted to bring her home, I didn't want to purchase her just to have her break in my luggage. With permission of the artist, Alvaro de la Cruz Lopez, I snapped a couple pictures of her to bring home with me. I always regretted not bringing her home, but instead of having her to myself, I've created this artwork to honor the memory and share with you.
